Why Hire A Doula?
The word doula comes from ancient Greek meaning "a woman who serves." Doulas provide you and your partner with informational, physical, and emotional support before, during and after the birth of your child.
Doulas DO NOT take the place of a supportive partner. A well-trained Doula will only enhance your partner's role in your birth experience. After all, they are welcoming a new baby into their lives as well, shouldn't they have a part in the labor process? I find most partners do in fact want to help but they simply don't know how. I take that eagerness and coach them effectively, showing them how to do counter-pressure techniques to lessen contraction pain, how to massage, encouraging them to be as involved as they feel comfortable.
Some women feel they don't need a Doula if they aren't planning for a "natural" birth. Doulas can assist in every type of birth! Even if you know you want an epidural waiting until you are in a good strong labor pattern is recommended, and a Doula will help you get there. Sometimes, due to hospital procedures or just how busy they may be women may have to wait for some time for their epidural. Having the proper coping skills and an extra set of hands can make all the difference during that waiting period. Some women also are unfortunately non-responsive to epidural medications and find themselves traumatized and not prepared to cope because they expected it to be pain free.
Even with the epidural in place a Doula can be very helpful. Perhaps your partner needs a break. Having a doula will ensure you are never left alone! A Doula will also remind you of how hard your body is still working even if you cannot feel it. She will help you change positions to still encourage descent. Epidurals can lead to other interventions and she will help you make informed and empowered decisions as needed.
Having continuous support by a doula can:
- Help lower your chances of Pitocin by 31%; often a catalyst for numerous other interventions
- Help lower your need for an epidural or other pain medications by 9%
- Help lower your risk of a C-section by 28%
- Increase your likelihood of being satisfied and happy with your birth experience
- Increase your baby's chances of nursing better and being healthier all around
